Unless you’re due or being induced in the next few days, you will likely ring in the New Year while pregnant. Though, to be fair, even if you’re due today, you could still be pregnant for awhile if the baby isn’t quite ready to make an exit as of yet! Whatever the case, the ending of one year and beginning of yet another can serve as a very important time of reflection.
In 2009, you found yourself pregnant. I know that the year I became pregnant with my relinquished daughter will forever stand out as one of the more difficult years of my life. It was fraught with hard decisions, health problems and, as I gave birth and relinquished the same year, a great loss. As you’re still pregnant and making your decisions as the calendar turns another page, you may be feeling different about this year and the coming one.
What’s any of this have to do with pregnancy?
I encourage you to truly celebrate the New Year! Without the champagne, of course. I do, however, want you to attend a party (if you’re not on bed rest) or have a few friends over, listen to some music, talk about your year and vow to make 2010 your best year yet. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?
Trust me, it has everything to do with your pregnancy.
As you face the decisions regarding the parenting or placement of your child, 2010 will likely be your most difficult year. You will face opposition no matter your decision. You will likely struggle with doubt, guilt, fear and a whole other slew of emotions. You may experience health complications due to your pregnancy. You may struggle financially. You will likely struggle emotionally and logically as you try to make sense of it all. This paragraph in itself sounds like 2010 could be your Worst Year Ever, right?
Don’t let it be!
You have the power right now to make it a good year. Whether you decide to parent or place, you can take charge of what is going on right now. You can research all of your options thoroughly. You can ask questions, demand answers and seek the truth. You can stand up for yourself and surround yourself with others who will do the same. You can cut people out of your life who refuse to respect you or support your decisions. Granted, you can do all of these things on any day of the week in any given month but there’s something special about starting a new year that allows you to take life by the horns and give it all you’ve got!
Over the next few days, as this year draws to a close, I will be discussing some goals, plans and ideas that you can think about regarding both parenting and placement in hopes of encouraging you to make 2010 your Best Year Ever.
